Below is our test footage. We changed the saturatation of our shots to give an early morning look.

Sarah + Rosie

Filming

We are going to comense filming early on in the coming weeks. The location we have chosen is Sawston high street. The reason for film in the morning is because we want the street we are filming in to be, as empty as possible. We have carefully chosen two actors, a girl and a guy. The part of the girl we cast to a student who does drama, therefore she will have acting experince. The part of the guy we cast to a singer in a band. For this part he is required to sing so as he is a singer he should be confident in this role. The costumes and props we need have been sorted. We asumed the singer had a suit however he didn't have one therefore we need to find one somewhere else either by hiring one or borrowing one from someones esle who is willing to lend it to us for the video. We need objects for the girl in the video to throw at the guy as he is singing these are props we also need to organise. We need a skateboard to put the camera on to get a smooth movement when filming as we have tried to film by hand but the results are really shaky and look amatuer. We have decided on a location however we need to decide on an exact date for filming when we are all free and also our perfomers are also free. This takes alot of organising and we also need to take into consideration things such as the weather which is variable this season, going into winter.

GROUP 12 FEEDBACK FOR GROUP 11 ANAMATIC

well done, specific and detailed drawings. maybe you should focus more on the sorts of shots in time with your music? however, we do feel that the anamatic shows thought and planning. its obvious that it focuses on the band/ singing.. we really liked the eye at the beginning when he sings 'i'. Good work =) x

No Soul-Lyrics

I ain't got no soul
I left you crying
and talking on your phone
saying I ain't got no soul
I ain't got no alcohol
so i went out drinking
instead of to your home
i ain't got no soul

all i do is try and
try to make you cry
kick you in the shins
poke you in the eye
it's out of my control
i ain't got no soul
all you do is good
and everything you should
you'd pay back the devil to save me
if you could
i listen to rock n' roll
but I ain't got no soul

I aint got no place to go
I don't need no one
im a rebel im a rebel
yeah
ohh I could cry
when I was feeling alone
then i'll take her heart
that's a body part
that I don't own

Analysis of Group 35

The camera angles used in this video are simplw yet extremely effective. They've used simple ideas using trolleys, skateboards, and an upside down camera to convey things the way they do. Sometimes this creates slightly blurry, out of focus shots but considering their use of resources I am really impressed.
They edited the shots together really well. Because of the tempo, and genre of music quick paced shots aren't needed meaning that they can use more flowing shots. They could have slowed some of the shots because some of the camera movements are a bit fast, however I think they have used this on some occasions.
The setting is appropriate as it is an empty carpark which is well suited to the lyrics 'Simplicity is all I'm looking for.' I think this is what they must have based the video on because the whole video has a very minimalist, simple feel because the artist is just wearing black, and they've just used one setting which is simple, yet effective.
The performance is good even though it doesnt take much. One problem is that he seems to forget the lyrics quite a bit. This could have enhanced the performance.
The video is very suited to the acoustic, solo style of the piece by the sort of sad, lonely effect that it has. Lonely is featured in the lyrics a few times so they have used this literally by using a lonely place and idea.

U + Me =Us
group 12

this music video has characteristics that are very common to the genre of boyband ballads. the similar clothing of all the guys in the video is also a common element to music videos of this genre, along with dancing in time with each other. there is also a clear leader or main vocalsist which corresponds with the genre.
there is a clear relationship between lyrics and visuals. for example while the lyrics are "u. plus sign. me. equals sign" the boys in the band are creating those signs with their arms.
music and visuals are also closely linked with dance moves in time and shots changing in time with the beats and sound effects of the song.
the idea of having a record label demamding certain things from a video is also present as there are shots of each member of the band doing there own lyrica bit of the song and also each doing parts of the "calculus"signs.
the part of the video with the girl in the car is also very appropriate for a video like this as it is sung and performed by men and is about a guy singing about a girl.
the end of the video is similar the part of bohemian rhapsody with the four guys faces close up. the cars acould also be a reference to any car based film like the fast and the furious etc.

Review of Past Years Music Video

Group R1-10 Naive

The song Naïve, by The Kooks fits into the indie rock genre. The song accompanying the video above isn’t the original but a cover by a female. The video complies with the indie and alternative rock genre, as it is a light video. The live cover suits the indie rock genre as many artists take on the do it your-self approach.

The video is set in Cambridge. The first shot of a girl in a telephone box in town establishes the setting. The girl makes her journey through the park and back into town.

The performance aspect of the music video is the girl singing as she walks along. The performance is integrated into the narrative of the video, as she walks past the three different couples and their situations unfold.

There are many shaky close-up shots throughout the video of the girl singing. The shakiness captures the feeling of her walking. There are many different shots of the girl as she makes her journey such as wide, medium, tracking bird’s eye and worms eye view. Shots of the girl’s feet feature throughout, as she walks on different surfaces she encounters. This variation of shot’s of the singer keeps it interesting. There are also many different shot of the couples for the same reason. Close-ups and over the shoulder shots are used when the couples are in conversation so the viewer can see.

The editing is subtle so it doesn’t overpower the music video. Black sections at the top and bottom frame the video. The black section at the bottom allows for the white subtitles to be seen that accompanies shots of the couples. These subtitles tell the viewer what is going on or what people are saying as dialogue can’t be heard. There are many quick cuts to keep shots brief. The video ends with a fade out.

The lyrics and visuals amplify each other. For example the chorus is consistently accompanied by shots of the couples. The music and visuals also compliment each other. For example the song starts once the girl turns her mp3 on and prior to this we only hear the ambient sound of the town. Another examples is the girl walking to the beat of the music.

The video meets the demand of record labels, as it incorporates lots of close-ups of the artist.

The video is an effective story drive video that follows some one on a journey. This makes it similar to what we plan to do. Like in this video we plan to integrate the performance with the narrative. We will do this by using the same person to sing and act.

Review of a past years music video

Group P1 04 Chain Reaction - J G Harding

I think this music video is a good example of where black and white footage can work well. Sometimes it is hard to pull it off without the video looking to dull and boring but I think this video has achieved it well. I think the use of cuts and fades are also very effective in this video as well. I like the shot of the telephone box we are possibly thinking of using some footage of a telephone box in our video. I think overall this video works really well there is a nice use of lighting and a good use of props as well however if they were to work on something I think toward the beginning some more work could be put into getting the lip syncing just right as I think it is slightly out. Apart form that I think this a very successful video.

Our Animatic...

This week in class we created an animatic for out music video. An animatic is a short video where you draw storyboards and then upload he images you have drawn to the computer and animate them. Sarah drew the storyboards and together we all put them into final cut and placed the images on top of the music track to get a rough idea of how we wanted out video to look. We added motion to some of our frames to give the idea of camera movement and on the Friday Cathie and Rosie went out and filmed some test footage, using different types of camera movement we had discussed having in out pitch and also which can be seen in out animatic below. When making this we thought a lot about how the shots would line up with the pace of the music for example having slow shots at the begging with not as many cuts where the music is slow and then as the song progress and the tempo of the music quickens we would speed up the cuts so the shots stay in time with the beat.

This is out animatic for the song 'No Soul' by 'The Rumble Strips'

Influences and Ideas

Incubus - Warning

This video shows a girl screaming and is set in really good light. It encompasses how over emotional the girl in our video could be. Although the theme is very different, the amount of effort put into the screaming is useful.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Although silhouetting really isn't appropriate i think having some profile shots of the couple will be important to the video. This will also bring out alot about the surroundings and how they are moving as they are arguing.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Having ruined make-up run down her face is both inkeeping with the fact that they are very well dressed in a dirty old street but also accentuates how she is emotional and the man in the video isn't.

The time of day and setting is key to this video and we are filming early in the moring for the light and the colour that the light brings with it. This also fits in with the narrative as they are coming home from a night out. The brought on by the low light of morning is a bluey grey, darker tint which will make the video more solemn and in-fitting with the lyrics. however contrasting the upbeat music.

Rosie

mood board, images...

I looked through images which I had on my computer and on the internet which I thought linked in well with the concept to our video pitch. I found many images and then I merged them into one main image on paint shop pro. This is the final project which I created. It includes photo's of empty streets, couples arguing, girls in formal dress and images that portray emotion.

Comment from Tom

Well done, you have been successful. Now make sure you develop your ideas with and anamatic, shot and prop lists and location hunting.

Pitch

Our video will be contrasting, with the people dressed up in a classy black-tie way, but have them stranded on a delapitated estate.
There will be a guy and a girl, in the middle of a heated arguement after a night out. It would be filmed very early in the morning as this gives us a nice light, and less crowded streets.
As the song has a male vocalist we are going to film the guy featured in the video miming the song the whole way through in front of various backgrounds which we may feature throughout the video.
The girl will have props to throw at the guy while the argument is going on and as the song finishes abruptly this will coincide with her throwing her dress at him.
There will also be a contrast in the emotions of both the guy and girl. The girl being particuarly over emotional, while the guy remains practically emotionless.
Because of the emotions on the girls face there will be close ups of her crying and screaming, but also longshots are needed to establish their situation and location on the street.

This is the kind of light we are hoping to film in. This picture is also suited because of the deserted station, and we are looking to film on near deserted streets, and have any onlookers to the arguement planned, and added ourselves.

This image is a still taken from the Lily Allen video for LDN. Even though the mood of this video is completely different to ours, the idea of her walking down a dirtyLondon street in a big dress is similar to ours.

This is the album cover for The Streets - A grand dont come for free. This is the kind of area we would like to film in because it creates such a strong sense of difference.

We will use a range of panning, close ups, p.o.v and long shots. This will help is to capture all elements of the argument, and it will help the audience understand the difference between our characters.
With the start of the song and the slow dramatic lyrics there will be a close up of the guys face as he is mining the lyrics(emotionless). There will also be use of profile shots of the couple walking and arguing to show the audience their situation.
Point of view shots will be used so that the audience are shown the girls emotions while being static in the guy's position. and visa versa.

Where possible we will take the lyrics as literally as we can - keeping the mood of video from being too heavy and dark.
We would put a sarcastic slant on the video because the song and lyrics are not completely serious.

we are group 11

cathie, hannah, sarah and rosie.
We are pitching for the Rumble Strips, "No Soul".
